NAPLES — To Trevor Moore, the 49er isn’t Joe Montana or Jerry Rice, it’s his 16-foot racing sailboat.

The 26-year-old Naples sailor, who is campaigning for the 2012 London Olympics, spoke to an intimate group of 15 Tuesday evening at the Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club to tell his story.

Moore and his racing partner, Erik Storck, debuted in 2009 and have steadily risen to be the top 49er sailors in the United States. Currently the duo is No. 1 in the 2011 World Cup rankings and also No. 1 in the 2011 U.S. Sailing Team AlphaGraphics.

Their ultimate goal is to be on the podium in London next summer. In order to do so, Moore and Storck must qualify for the U.S. National Team. The two-part qualification will start in Weymouth, England, June 6-11, 2011. The finish in the United Kingdom contest will be combined with results in the ISAF Worlds in Perth, Australia, in December. And as long as a U.S. boat is among the top 20 countries, then the U.S. as a country will qualify for the 2012 Olympics.

The 49er team has sailed in Weymouth several times preparing for the qualifiers.

“It’s an exciting spot because you see a variety of conditions,” Moore said. “One day it might be quite light and you might not even sail, and the next day it might be blowing 20 knots (approximately 23 mph).”

Moore and Storck spend about four days a week in the gym and do cardiovascular exercises daily maintaining their high-level fitness.

“We’re not dumbbell orientated. It’s explosive maneuvers with bands and medicine balls,” Moore said.

Their drills are more agility based because the boat isn’t stable—like football.

Their next stop to sail is Spain later this month. “It’s an adventure,” Moore said.
